Why Personal Jesus?

This is one of the few Depeche Mode songs whose story is well not known because Martin Gore is reluctant to describe where it came from.

In fact, the source of inspiration was the book by Priscilla Presley, the former wife of 'the king', 'Elvis And Me', about living with the legendary musician.

Martin read it and decided to write a song about how one person can become a 'god' to another: "when you first surround another person with love, you become a life beacon for him, and then he dissolves in you and loses his own personality".

He says: "This is a song about how it feels to be Jesus for someone, those who give you hope and care about you. She wrote about how Elvis was her man and her mentor, and how often this happens in lovers' relationships, like loving someonemakes them like a god, and this is not a very reasonable perception of another person, is it?"
